Student's letter of Introduction

Dear host family,

First of all I want to thank you for reading my letter in which I want to introduce myself and tell you something about my family, my friends, my hobbies, my all-day-life and my hopes and expectations of my year abroad.

My name is Markus Zotz, I am 15 years old and my parent’s only child. I have got a very good relationship with my parents. I can tell them everything at any time. I think my mother is insightfully, tolerant and would do anything that I feel fine. She is lively, energetic and we laugh a lot. My father is kind of opposite to my mother: He is calm, stable and docile. He works hard, from 8am to 8pm, so we don’t have so much time to spend together, but in his leisure time we often play tennis together. Generally, we are a very sporty family: We often go skiing in winter, and cycling in summer. I can say that they are very caring and that they mean a lot to me.

We live in Kichheim near Munich in a nice flat with a beautiful garden which is one of my mother’s hobbies. I am very happy here, because here’s all that I need: We have got a small lake here in Kirchheim, the “Heimstettener See” we’ve got the alps just one hour away by car where I go snowboarding in winter and it’s just 20 minutes by train to the city centre of Munich, where I go shopping or to the cinema. And we have got the “Gymnasium Kichheim”, where I’ve been going to school for 5 years now. Before, I had gone to “Grundschule III Heimstetten”. I have to say that we have great neighbors with which we do a lot of funny things. We have known many of them for almost ten years now and we often go on holiday together for example.

I love doing sports: I play football at “SV Heimstetten”, we practice 3 times a week and I play tennis at “TC 83 Kirchheim”, we practice once a week and this year we won the championship. In my free time I go to our sports field or to our tennis court whenever the weather is fine. I have been playing tennis for almost 10 years now and I would like to continue this during my year abroad. I often play basketball with my friends and it would be a great pleasure for me if I could play for your high school team, because at Kirchheim there is no basketball team and I’ve always wanted to play in a basketball team. In winter I go snowboarding at the Alps nearly every weekend with my friends or my parents. I can’t imagine winter without snowboarding. A dream would come true to me if I could go snowboarding in the Rocky Mountains. Generally, I like being in the mountains, because my mother grew up at Oberstdorf, a small city in the very south of Germany, just in the Alps, and my grandmother and my uncle still live there. I often visit her in winter. As I just said above I also like cycling. I have done a couple of bicycle tours with my parents. For example last year we cycled 250 miles from Passau to Vienna. So you see, sport is very important to me. Another hobby of mine is music: I have been playing the guitar for 3 years. I have got an acoustic guitar, but now, as I have just founded a band, I am about to buy myself an electric guitar. I often play together with a friend who is also guitarist and that is how we got the idea to found a band. He plays the lead guitar, another friend plays the drums and I sing and play the rhythm guitar. We make alternative music. We have already written a few songs. I will bring my guitar with me, so I could play a song of my band for you. Moreover I have also been to a lot of rock concerts of my favorite bands. I listen to music whenever I am at home. You could say that cooking is kind of a hobby for me, too. As my mother has to work until 3pm, I am starving when I come from school at 1pm. So I had to learn cooking by myself. Mainly, I cook noodles but I could also cook some typically German meals for you. I also like to travel with my parents: We have already been to the Caribbean, to Dubai, to France, to Spain and to Thailand. Furthermore we camp every year in the summer holiday at Italy with friends and neighbors. We have been to the USA, too, but I was only six years old at that time, so unfortunately I can’t remember anything. But now, I want to learn about the USA all the more.

Well, I am really interested in your country and your culture and I hope you can show me a lot of interesting things that are new to me, as I would like to tell you about Germany and Europe. So many things I like come from the USA, for example many of my favorite bands, basketball, snowboarding or skateboarding. So it had always been a dream for me to go there. I think the school system in the USA is so much better than ours. Here in Germany, school is kind of a chore, we don’t have school spirit like in the USA here. So I’m really looking forward to my first American school day. I especially like that there is so much sport offered after school and that you can take the courses you want. Moreover I hope to find new friends in America. I think an exchange year abroad is a great chance for all the involved to learn something about the culture of a country on the other side of the world, to get more experienced and to broaden one’s mind. I am sure that I will get more independent during this year, because that will be the first time for me far away from my family and my friends.

Friends would describe me as outgoing, spontaneous, humorous, companionable and open for everything and everyone. I think one of my strengths is my sociability. I always, especially if I had an argue with someone, want to make it right for everyone. I just want me and my environment to be happy all the time. So I am sure we will find solutions together for upcoming problems. All the same I need some time alone, so that I can relax by playing the guitar, listening to music or something like that. I can’t stand importunate people that want to be around me all the time. I like being with friends, but I also need time for other things.

So when I’m with friends, we do sports like basketball, football or tennis. We often go out at the weekends. In summer we barbecue at the “Heimstettener See” almost every weekend. In winter we often go snowboarding together. One of my friends has a cottage in the Alps, where we go in the winter holidays. Or I just go practicing with my band.

Well, I hope you could get an impression of me and my life.

LG BEcky
