Mein "Host-Family-Letter"

Was haltet ihr davon???

Dear Host Family
My name is … and I am a 19-year-old girl.
I live in …, a very small village in the south of Germany. It’s close to Freiburg im Breisgau.
… is located in the Black Forrest. In summers the weather is nice and it’s quite warm and in winters we have a lot of snow, so that we can go out to built snowmen or to tobogganing.
Here I live together with my mother … and my elder brother …, who studies history and politics in Freiburg. My mum and my brother support me in my plans to spend a year abroad, because they think it’s a great chance for me to explore the world and especially my mum is happy, that I have such nice plans for my future. I don’t have any contact to my father anymore. My parents split up 9 years ago, because of arguing all the time about every silly thing.
At the moment I visit the 13th grade of a secondary school in our neighbor village …
In June I will pass my exams and then I want to spend a year abroad in the USA.

While I grew up we had a dog, two cats, a bunny and three guinea pigs living with us. I’m used to live with pets and animals, because all our neighbors have got cows, horses or goats – as you can see we are living in the countryside.

Besides caring for the animals I’m used to do other housework, i.e. tidying up, cleaning our home and cooking for the whole family. (I really love to cook and to see that the people like what I cooked)

Now, I want to tell you more about me and my personality.
I am an open-minded, reliable, active, nice and responsible person. Because I am easy-going I can deal with new situations easily, so I think you would have no problems with me.

In my spare time I’m used to meet my friends and we love to talk for hours about everything and everybody. We go out to do many different things like going to the cinema, ice-skating, bowling, swimming, going to a pleasure ground or we stay at home to watch DVD or cook together. I love to try new things and I’m open to everything new.

Unfortunately I don’t have the time to do many other things at the moment, because I have to learn for my exams – that takes up a lot of time.
Otherwise I love spending time outside and doing all kind of sports. Not professional or really good, but I think its fun to play baseball, even though I don’t hit the ball every time. I’m also a member of our horseback riding club and I attended to a tournament and got off second-best. I had to finish my “successful” career, because my riding instructor finished his career. But I’m still able to take seat on a horseback and to ride it.
Music is a very important part of my life, even though I’m not able to play any instrument, but I love listen to all kind os music whenever I’ve got the time.

Why I want to be an au pair? The answer is easy. I love kids. I like to care for them, to play with them, to educate them and to get everything back by their affection to me.
I think the au pair job is the best opportunity to learn everything about an American family and how an American lives like because as an au pair you are a part of the family and you are integrated in every step of the family´s life.
Another reason for me, why I want to be an au pair is that I want to do something else before I start studying. I spend the last 13 years of my life in school, every year the same routine and if I would begin to study straight away I wouldn’t have a break. I see this year spending in America as a great opportunity to do something else than sitting in the school or in the university. That doesn’t mean that I don’t want to learn anything, quite the contrary.
I think that I will learn a lot more about your culture and the famous “American way of life” spending a year in the USA than sitting at home and reading books about it.
I want to see the world and I think being an au pair is the perfect way for a young girl, who loves children (like I do), to make a great experience

For me it’s great to see how the children grow up, how they learn new things everyday and how fast they develop in a little while.
I did babysitting in my school. They were the children of our teachers and I really felt honored that they choose me to care for their children. There was, amongst others, a small boy, Paul. The only thing he was able to say was “Auto” (=Car). We played with a dinosaur and he also called it “Auto”. I started to say “It is called Dino” and after a while he started to call it “Dino”, too. This is one of the reasons why I love spending time with children. Almost everything you give to them, they will give it back to you sooner or later – that’s one of the greatest feeling in the world to me.
During my time in your family I hope to become a part of it. I would like to be like a big sister or at least a very good friend of your children.

My goals for the future are to pass the exams, to get a lovely family and to be welcome. After the year I want to study social pedagogy and there I want to specialize on child and youth welfare. For this the trip abroad would have a very positive effect in case of working with children and deepen my English.

All in all I can say that I´m very excited to make this great experience in my life and I hope that all my plans and dreams will become true.

Finally I want to thank you that you took the time to read my letter and now I’m really looking forward to talk to you!

Yours sincerely
