Host family letter :)

kennt man ja schon…ich freu mich auf kommentare und verbesserugsvorschläge

Dear hostfamily,

first of all, I would like to thank you for reading my letter and spending time on getting to know me better. We never met – so I hope the following lines will give you an impression about me, my life in Germany and why I would like to spend a year in the USA.

My name is Nathalie, I am fifteen years old and I’ll become 16 on March 31st. My friends describe me as an open-minded, funny, spontaneous, sportive and creative person. Laughing is one of my favorite things to do, I am an optimistic person and I’m always making the most out of every situation.

I’m living together with my parents XXX &XXX, my almost-14-year-old brother XXX and my very cute little sister XXX. I guess my sister is the cutest, funniest little thing in the whole world, maybe she is a little bit clumsy. That often makes it difficult to look after her which is something I got to do a lot when my parents are working. In spite of everything, I love her so much, she’s my favorite sister. My brother and I sometimes play video games together. It’s always fun because we can laugh about the same things. I have a really good relationship to my parents. My father works a lot, as a controller, but I’ll always be his “little” girl. My mother also has a lot of work to do. I try to help her whenever I can. Helping in the kitchen and with the laundry, as well as babysitting and tidying up my room are thing I always had to do. Both of my parents raised me to be a creative, loving, honest and responsible person with an own opinion. In fact, I love them all so much and you cannot put us all together in a room without having a really funny, good time.

My family and I, we live in a small town very close to Berlin. Berlin is awesome, I spend a lot of my free time there, going to the movies, shopping or just hanging out with some of my friends at Starbuck’s. I love our girls’ nights as well as go swimming at a lake close to my school in summer. Besides my family, my friends are the most important persons in my life. I don’t really have one best friend, but I have many very good friends. They listen to me and try to help, when I have troubles and we laugh a lot. I can count on them and we always have so much fun together. On the weekends we go out, cook or go to concerts together. We all love dancing as well as music in general.

Besides my friends I also have some other interests, and music is one of them. I have been playing piano for almost ten years and I’m teaching myself to play the guitar for about two years. I really got good at playing piano but playing the guitar will always be something I just do for fun. I always did a lot of sports. I started playing tennis in a club in my hometown six years ago, and I started practicing Kung Fu even earlier. In addition I love to go jogging whenever there is time for it. Since I got an on easel for Christmas, I also like painting.

I attend the 10th grade of a small school close to the place where I live. My favorite subjects in school are PE, art, biology and politics. I like PE and art because I love painting and sports, too, and I like Biology and Politics because I like to know as much as possible about the world around me. Besides English I learn French and Spanish at school. I’m a class representative and I love how school gives me the chance to spend time with my friends in the breaks and at lunch.

Probably you will ask yourself why I want to be an exchange student. I think it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, getting to know the „American way of life“, improve my English and make new experiences. It’s not that I don’t like my life here in Germany, in contrary, I will miss my family and my friends for sure. But I know that the experiences of one year with you will be more than worth leaving my normal home. I am so excited about the stay and I hope I‘ll be able to show you something about the German way of life. As I love cooking I could also cook German meals for you.

I am looking forward to get to know you an Iam so thankful that you consider hosting me for one year.

So I hope I will hear from you and even more to be a part of your family,

Yours,

Me

puh, ich hoffe ich bin bald damit durch

1 „Gefällt mir“

Dear hostfamily,

first of all, I want to thank you for reading my letter and spending time on getting to know me better. We never met each other – so I want to give you in the following lines an impression about me, my life in Germany and why I would like to spend a year in the USA.

My name is Nathalie, I am fifteen years old and I’ll become 16 on March 31st. My friends would describe me as an open-minded, funny, spontaneous, sportive and creative person. I am a very happy person who loves laughting, I am an optimistic person and I’m always making the most out of every situation.

I’m living together with my parents XXX & XXX, my almost-14-year-old brother XXX and my very cute little sister XXX. I guess my sister is the cutest, funniest little thing in the whole world, maybe she is a little bit clumsy. That often makes it difficult to look after her which is something I have to do a lot when my parents are working. In spite of everything, I love her so much, (she’s my favorite sister → das würde ich raus lassen…). My brother and me sometimes play video games together. It’s always fun because we can laugh about the same things. I have a really good relation to my parents. My father works a lot, as a controller, but I’ll always be his “little” girl (??? das klingt irgendwie… unselbstständig. Ich weiß zwar wie du´s meinst, aber ICH würde es weglassen). My mother also has a lot of work to do. I try to help her whenever I can. Helping in the kitchen and with the laundry, as well as babysitting and tidying up my room are things I always have to do. Both of my parents raised me to be a creative, loving, honest and responsible person with an own opinion. Probably you will ask yourself why I want to be an exchange student. It is not that I don’t like my life here in Germany, in contrary, I will miss my family and my friends for sure. But I know that the experiences of one year with you will be more than worth leaving my german home. Gefällt mir echt gut, dein Brief!

Hallo,

Dear hostfamily,

first of all, I would like to thank you for reading my letter. As we haven`t met so far I would like to introduce myself to you and give you an impression of me, my life in Germany and why I would like to spend a year in the USA.

My name is Nathalie and I am fifteen years old. My friends would describe me as an open-minded, funny, spontaneous, sportive and creative person. I love laughting, I am an optimistic person and I always make the most out of every situation.

I live together with my parents XXX & XXX, my 13-year-old brother XXX and my very cute little sister XXX. I guess my sister is the cuttest and funniest little thing in the world but as she is a bit clumsy it is pretty difficult to look after her - I often do this while my parents are working. My brother and me sometimes play videogames together. It’s always fun because we can laugh about the same things.
I get along very good with my parents. My father is a controller (?) and my mother (?). I try to help her whenever I can. Often I help out in the kitchen or with the laundry, look after my sister and tidy up my room. Indeed I love my family so much and you cannot put us all together in a room without having a really funny, good time.

We live in a small town very close to Berlin. Berlin is awesome - I love spending my spare time there and go to the movies, go shopping or just hang out with my friends at Starbuck’s.
Beside my family, my friends are the most important people in my life. I don’t really have one best friend but many very good friends. They listen to me, try to help me with my problems and, of course, we have a lot of fun together. At the weekend we enjoy going out, doing sleepovers, going swimming, cooking or going to concerts. We all love both music and dancing !

Beside spending time with my friends I also have some other interests and music is one of them. I have played piano for almost ten years and I teach myself playing the guitar for about two years. I`m pretty good when it comes to playing the piano but I will always be playing the guitar just for fun.
Furthermore I do a lot of sports: I started playing tennis in a club in my hometown six years ago and I started practicing Kung Fu even earlier. Moreover I love to go jogging in my spare time and as I got an on easel (?) for Christmas I also enjoy painting.

Currently I attend the 10th grade of a small school close to our place. My favorite subjects are PE, Arts, Biology and Politics. I like PE and Arts because I love painting and being active and I like Biology and Politics because I enjoy to know as much as possible about the world around me. Beside English I learn French and Spanish at school. I’m a class representative and really enjoy going to school as I can spend time with my friends during the breaks and at lunch.

Probably you will ask yourself why I want to be an exchange student. I think it’s a great opportunity to have a great experience, meet new people, get to know the „American way of life“ and improve my English. I really enjoy my life in Germany and I´m pretty sure that I will miss my family and my friends a lot. But I know that this experience of one year with you will be more than worth leaving my home. I am so excited about my year abroad and would be glad to spend this time with you guys and become a part of your family !

I hope to hear from you soon !

Yours,

Me

Viele Grüße,

Marie-Claire

Hallo! Ich werde gerner auf Englisch schreiben, weil mein Deutsch ist etwar rostig :stuck_out_tongue: I worked for an American exchange organization for many years, so I am very familiar with the host family letter!

Your letter is good, but I have one big suggestion: take the paragraphs about music (piano), art and school (from the bottom) and move them above the part where you talk about your friends. Those paragraphs have some very good details that will help you find a family, but the details about hanging with your friends, shopping, etc. are not as strong as your hobbies. You should put your strongest information first.

Also a small thing that you maybe should not fix because it’s very „German“ and I like that, but… it is „sporty“ not „sportive“

Viel Glueck! Ich habe ein Blog, und hab nur Gestern ueber die Gastfamilienaufsatz geschrieben – http://highschoolexchange.wordpress.com. But I wanted to give you direct advice and not just a link :grinning:
