Dear Host Family,

First of all I want to thank you for reading my letter and spending time on getting to know me better.
Spending one year in Costa Rica is my biggest dream. In this letter I will tell you something about me, my family and friends, my hobbies, my life in Austria and my hopes for the year in Costa Rica and my future.

My name is Sarah and I’m 15 years old. I’d describe myself as an open-minded, helping, spontaneous,
funny and ambitious girl. Like everyone I also have some weaknesses, e.g. I spend a lot of money on clothes, I am sarcastic and I am no person who needs peple around him all the time.
I live in a 3000-inhabitants village in the north-west of Austria (a small country in the centre of Europe) with my family. My family consists of my mum (46), my dad (48) and my my sister Bianca (12).
My mum and my dad are both working, while my sister is attending the local middle school. The relationship between my family and me is a very good one. We can have a lot of fun together and especially the relationship to my sister is improving now, that we are getting older and she is not only a sister to me, but also a friend.
In my family, everyone has responsibilities and I guess, that this is another reason, why we get along with each other so good. E. g., I do the cooking on monday and tuesday, when my mother is working and (because I like cooking a lot anyway) on the weekend and during the holidays.
Furthermore me and my sister have to set the table, load and unload the dishwasher, do the washing-up and keep our room tidy.
Since my mother has been working for a long time, I can assume responsibility for myself well.

Beside my family are my friends the most important persons in my life. I do not have a real best friend, but many really good friends, which I know for very long, one even since my birth. These girls are wonderful persons and I can talk to them, when I have troubles and laugh with them, but what I like best about them is, that they accept me the way I am. At the moment I don’t see them every day, because we are all attending different schools, but we are playing volleyball together, doing sleepovers, watching movies or are just hanging out. On the weekends we sometimes go bathing during the summertime, to parties or we go out, although I don’t go out very often at the moment because I have to save money.=)

I am now attending the 10th grade of a secondary school with the focus on communication, which is about 20 kilometres away from my hometown. I really like going there to school, because I have found many new friends and even the subjects and teachers are pretty good.=)
The subjects I like best are German, English, French and Arts. I have liked languages ever since, because I like writing and reading andI’m interested in foreign countries and cultures and languages are just another part of it. I also like Arts, as you can be creative in this subject and you can include your fantasy.
This school year I also want to participate in our theater group with some friends, as you can be creative while playing.
In my leisure, I do voluntary work at the local library with a friend of mine. We are a group of girls and women working there and I enjoy my work very much, because I totally like reading. My friend and I are always having much fun while doing this and the best thing is, that we can borrow books and DVD’s for free. (I am very glad about this matter, because otherwise I’d have to spend loads of money on books, as I read a lot!)

At the moment I don’t have any career plans yet, because I think that I will still change myself, particularly while and after my exchange program. I can only tell by now, that I want to do a voluntary year after finishing school. Afterwards I will have to study, I probably want to do something social or become a teacher.

You surely will ask yourself, why I want to be an exchange student. Well, a few months ago a schoolmate told me, that she was going to do an exchange year and that’s how I’ve heard about it the first time ever.
After this, I started thinking about this matter and it became more and more interesting. I thought this is a great opportunity to get to know a new culture, new people, new experiences and a new language. It’s not that I don’t like my home here in Austria, in the opposite, for sure I’ll miss my family, my friends, and also a few things that always seemed to be naturally to me. But I believe the experiences I’ll have at Costa Rica will be more than worth to leave my usual home for a year. When I did some research on the internet I found out, that there is a big variety of countries you can visit. I absolutely wanted to do my exchange year in a country totally different from Austria and when I found out more about Costa Rica, I almost fell in love with the beauty of the country and the easy way of life.

Again, I want to thank you for reading my letter and if you should give me the opportunity to stay with you for a year I’d do my very best as a family member!
